what cause my constipation?
Dose Seroquel, tryptophan, or Baclofen cause my constipation?
I take Seroquel, tryptophan, and Baclofen. Could any of these cause constipation for long periods? If not, could it be a dietary problem ?Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic agent used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The most common side effects with Seroquel are drowsiness, headache, agitation, dizziness, increased cholesterol, dry mouth, and weight gain. Other side effects with Seroquel include constipation. Baclofen is a skeletal muscle relaxant which is used to treat muscle spasms. The most common side effects with baclofen are drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, slurred speech, and psychiatric disturbances. Other side effects with baclofen include constipation. Tryptophan is sold as a dietary supplement for many indications including "insomnia, anxiety, and depression." Because dietary supplements (e.g., tryptophan) have not been thoroughly studied in the clinical setting, possible side effects and interactions with other drugs are not well-known. Also, because herbs and supplements are not strictly regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, these products are not required to be tested for effectiveness, purity, or safety. In general, dietary supplements should only be taken under the supervision of your health care provider. There are several ways to help prevent and treat constipation without using medications. Regular exercise is one way to prevent constipation. Drinking water and other fluids is another. You need about 8 glasses of water and other non-caffeinated beverages a day, so you may need to increase your fluid intake. Getting enough fiber in your diet is another way to prevent constipation.

Is omeprazole, prednisone, lutein, aspirin, triamterene, or atenolol causing my constipation?
I take omeprazole, prednisone, lutein, aspirin, triamterene, and atenolol. Do any of these cause constipation ?Omeprazole (Prilosec) is a proton pump inhibitor that stops acid secretion in the stomach. It is used to prevent and treat ulcers in the stomach and intestine and also to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The most common side effects of omeprazole are headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and gas. Constipation was reported by 1.5 percent of patients taking omeprazole. Prednisone is a commonly used oral corticosteroid to suppress inflammation and the immune response. It is approved to treat a number of different conditions. According to the package insert, the most common side effects of prednisone are sleep problems, mood changes, acne, dry skin, increased sweating, nausea, stomach pain, and bloating, headache, dizziness, and changes in body shape or location of body fat (especially in face and neck). Constipation is not specifically listed as a side effect of prednisone. Triamterene is a diuretic or water pill used to reduce fluid retention and treat high blood pressure. The most common side effects of triamterene are drug allergy including rash, changes in blood potassium levels, and weakness. Constipation is not specifically listed as a side effect of triamterene. Atenolol is a beta blocker that works to slow the heart rate. It is used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain (angina). The most common side effects of atenolol are tiredness, dizziness, depression, and cold fingers and toes. Nausea and diarrhea have been reported, but not constipation, in patients taking atenolol. Aspirin is a fever and pain reducer as well as a anti-platelet drug that helps prevent blood clots from forming. The most common side effects of aspirin are upset stomach, heartburn, and vomiting. Lutein is a natural antioxidant that is found in green leafy vegetables and egg yolks. Lutein is also available as a dietary supplement that may help maintain healthy eyes and skin. Safety and side effect information on lutein is limited because it is a dietary supplement and not regulated in the same way as prescription drugs. These products are not required to be tested for effectiveness, purity, or safety by the US Food and Drug Administration. No information suggests that lutein causes constipation. This is not a complete list of the side effects associated with the specified medications. Constipation can have many causes and should be discussed with your health care provider.Do not stop any medication or change the dose without first talking to your provider. Some lifestyle changes may help relieve constipation including eating more fiber, drinking plenty of fluids, getting regular exercise, and answering the call to use the bathroom. .
Can Synthroid, Evista, or Xanax cause constipation?
Can Synthroid, Evista, or Xanax cause constipation?I take Synthroid, Evista and sometimes Xanax. Could any of these medications cause constipation?Synthroid (levothyroxine) is a medication that is used to treat hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid. It is a synthetic version of the natural thyroid hormone the body produces and works by supplementing the thyroid gland to help alleviate symptoms of your condition. The prescribing information on Synthroid lists the following as side effects of the medication, usually occurring when your dosage is not quite right: increased appetite, fever, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, flushing, palpitations, or shakiness.
Evista, a medication that is used to prevent or treat osteoporosis and to reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Evista belongs to a group of medications called selective estrogen receptor modulators and works by having anti-estrogen effects on the breasts and estrogen effects on the bones to help strengthen them. The prescribing information on Evista lists the following as the most common side effects of the medication: hot flashes, joint pain, fluid retention, flu-like symptoms, muscle spasms, insomnia, and sweating.
Xanax a medication that is used to treat anxiety. It is in the group of medications called benzodiazepines that work by affecting a chemical in the brain that causes a feeling of calmness. The prescribing information on Xanax lists the following as the most common side effects of the medication: drowsiness, coordination problems, irritability, increased appetite, speech problems, unusual dreams, weight changes, and dry mouth. The prescribing information on your medications do not list constipation as a side effect commonly experienced by patients. Can Niaspan or lovastatin cause constipation and/or weight gain?
Can Niaspan or lovastatin cause constipation and/or weight gain?
Can Niaspan or lovastatin cause constipation and/or weight gain?Niaspan (niacin extended release) is a medication that is used to lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels in the body. Niacin is a B vitamin and is believed to work by decreasing the activity of an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides and helps remove them from the body. It is also thought that it decreases the amount of triglycerides produced by the liver. The prescribing information on Niaspan does not list weight gain or constipation as a side effect of the medication. The most common side effects are: flushing of the face or neck, headache, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, and itching. Lovastatin is a medication that is used to lower LDL (bad cholesterol), increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease total cholesterol. Lovastatin is in the group of medications called statins that work by decreasing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. This action forces the liver to use cholesterol from the bloodstream and this lowers your cholesterol levels. The prescribing information on lovastatin does list constipation as a side effect of the medication.Opana cause constipation
Is Opana cause constipation?
I take Opana for pain, and I am always constipated. Is there anything I can do about this? Is the medication causing this?Opana (oxymorphone) is in a class of medications called opioid or narcotic analgesics. Opana is used to treat acute moderate to severe pain. Opana works by altering the way in which the body senses pain. The most common side effects with Opana are: constipation, nausea, fever, sleepiness, vomiting, itching, headache, dizziness, and confusion. Opana has the potential to cause severe constipation, according to its prescribing information. People who take Opana along with anticholinergic medications or other medications with anticholinergic activity may have an increased risk of severe constipation, which may lead to paralytic ileus (intestinal obstruction due to paralysis of the intestinal muscles). Laxatives and/or stool softeners or other approaches should be considered with the start of Opana therapy, according to prescribing information. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water each day; eating 2 to 4 servings of fresh fruit and 3 to 5 servings of vegetables; and getting regular exercise are strategies that are often recommended to treat and prevent constipation, including constipation due to the use of opioids. However, the most appropriate management of constipation associated with opioid use often depends on many patient-specific characteristics. For more specific information, consult with your doctor or pharmacist for guidance based on your health status and current medications, particularly before taking any action. Derek Dore, PharmDWhy Do Some Foods Cause Constipation?
Only one 'food' component that may cause constipation
— indigestible fiber. Too much fiber leads to bowel obstruction, too little indicates bowel dependence. All other natural foods digest near completely, and don't play any role in forming stools. In fact, if your stool test shows any remnants of fats, proteins, or carbohydrates, it means you are affected by a severe malabsorption disorder, ranging from gastroenterocolitis to liver or pancreatic cancer.Problems watching? View onYouTube.Transcript:Any medical reference or web site you check, you usually read about some foods that cause constipation… Among the guiltiest are the usual suspects: white rice, whole milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, red meat, bananas, carrots, high fat food, and so on…Actually, none of these foods can cause constipation anymore than wind or water. That is because none of them ever reach the colon undigested. That much is written in any textbook on human physiology and/or gastric disorders, and any physician or nutritionist claiming otherwise must go back to school! What little remains from digested foods is called ash, and ash represents between 0.2% and 1.2% of total stool weight. This means if you eat a pound of meat, cheese, or rice, only one teaspoon of ash, about 5 grams, will reach your bowels, not enough to play any role in a bowel movement or constipation. In fact, the only food that can cause constipation is dietary fiber because it is the only known food that reaches the colon undigested! If you think you‘ve misheard me, I repeat again: dietary fiber Is the only food that causes constipation. That is because if you eat one pound of fiber, the exact same pound will reach your bowel undigested. Along the way it will absorb water and expand 5 to 10 times its original size and weight. After these 5 to 10 pounds of, pardon me, heavy crap, get stuck in your bowel, you too will get stuck in the bathroom, because normal stools shouldn‘t be larger than your middle finger and heavier than 100-150 grams or 3 to 5 ounces per bowel movement. To learn more about this paradox, please visit this page. It will also teach you how to wean yourself from fiber dependence, and more damage! Good luck!RecommendationsIf you still doubt my words, and I am sure you do doubt them seriously, let me ask you these five simple questions: 1. How come healthy breastfed infants enjoy several bowel movements daily, while breast milk — the only food they eat — is a zero-fiber, zero-residue, high-fat product? 2. Or, how come people who fast for medical or religious reasons for extended periods of time have regular, albeit smaller, bowel movements throughout the fast, even though they take nothing by mouth, but water? Do they have bowels different from yours?3. Or, how come the Inuit — the indigenous people of the Arctic region of Canada, Greenland, and Alaska, who in their natural habitat eat a high-fat, zero-fiber diet their entire lives, and never experience constipation? Do they have bowels different from yours? 4. Or, how come Japanese people, who eat mostly fatty fish and white rice, and almost no fiber, enjoy better health and longer lives than most Americans? Do they have bowels different from yours? 5. Or, how come, a good number of people who have succeeded on Atkins-style diets, have normal stools with zero fiber in their diet? Do these lucky bastards have bowels different from yours? The proper answer to all of these rhetorical questions: Of course, not! All human bowels are exactly the same from birth, except some are healthier than others. And the reason none of these people ever experience constipation is simply this: — Healthy stools contain no food remnants, and a healthy bowel doesn‘t require any food remnant to function properly. Stools aren‘t made from food, unless these foods contain indigestible fiber. I repeat again:Natural every day foods play no role in constipation development, unless these foods contain dietary fiber! If and when consuming zero- or near zero-fiber foods — such as whole milk, cheese, meats, white rice, bananas, and so on — this results in constipation, it means that your normal bowel function has been already compromised by a combination of factors, such as a high fiber diet, antibiotics, mercury fillings, prescription drugs, straining, muscular dystrophy, nerve damage, and/or various other, similar factors. It also means that you are already affected bylatent constipation, which, in turn, is highly dependent on a daily intake of fiber-dense foods to plunge out the stools. If you are freaking out from hearing what you believe to be sheer heresy, let me throw at you one last question: — Why do doctors prescribe a zero fiber diet to all patients who are admitted to hospital with bowel disorders? Okay, I‘ll help you with the answer. They prescribe a fiber-free diet because it is the only way to quickly stabilize the patient by relieving the gas, bloating, cramping, and intestinal inflammation caused by any fiber bulk and fermentation. To learn more about normal bowel function, why natural foods play no role in constipation, and how to eliminate constipation without resorting to fiber and laxatives, review this first: Stool Composition. If you are already affected by constipation, and require immediate relief, start here: Colorectal Recovery Kit, and select all or some of the kit's components to fit your particular circumstances. If you would like to eliminate the underying causes of constipation, and prevent further colorectal damage, begin here: No Downsize, Just Upside-down.And if you are a natural skeptic, and trust no one, or question my motives because I recommend supplements on this site, then follow your doctor's advice to the tee, don't eat foods that “cause constipation.”Medications cause constipation
A frequently over-looked cause constipation is medications. The most common offending medications include: Narcotic pain medications such as codeine (for example, Tylenol #3), oxycodone (for example, Percocet), and hydromorphone (Dilaudid); Antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep) and imipramine (Tofranil) Anticonvulsants such as phenytoin (Dilantin) and carbamazepine (Tegretol) Iron supplements Calcium channel blocking drugs such as diltiazem (Cardizem) and nifedipine (Procardia) Aluminum-containing antacids such as aluminum hydroxide suspension (Amphojel) and aluminum carbonate (Basaljel)In addition to the medications listed above, there are many others that can cause constipation. Simple measures(for example, increasing dietary fiber) for treating the constipation caused bymedications are often are effective, and discontinuing the medication is notnecessary. If simple measures don't work, it may be possible to substitute aless constipating medication. For example, a nonsteroidal ant-inflammatorydrug (for example, ibuprofen) may be substituted for narcotic pain medications.Additionally, one of the newer and less constipation antidepressant medications(for example, fluoxetine [Prozac]) may be substituted for amitriptyline and imipramine.
