Constipation in old people

I'm 80 years old. Five years ago I had radiation for postrate cancer since then I have severe constipation. The doctor gave me some medications but nothing works. When I go to the bathroom I cry from the pain. Is anybody that had the same problem after having radiation? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried to treat your condition with constipation home treatments? If you are interested, here are some suggestions. Drink vegetables and fruit juice with pure water every day. You can blend cucumber, celery, carrot, pear, apple and avocado. It's a great constipation treatment and also great to keep you energized. It also cleanses the colon. You can drink warm water with lemon as often as you wish to. Helps build the colon walls and eases constipation. You can drink a mix of flax seeds powder and water in the morning before eating breakfast.

I know a lot of people takes lots of vegetables and fruit, but none work. I had the same problem.Recently, I had constipation and sometimes the tip of my stool is mixed with blood!So after advice from my mother, I started taking honey drink (honey mixed with warm water) every morning after I've wake up. It kind of soothes your stomach and lets you feel less bloated.Then in the late afternoon or evening, I will take about 8oz-10oz of prune juice. It works for my within 2 hours. The stool will be watery and passes out easily.Not forgetting, remember to take lots of water and especially orange juice throughout the day, so that your body feels less dehydrated and it will probably also ease constipation.Honey drink and prune juice does wonders!Hope that helps!

child constipated

child is severely constipated
Our daughter has begun to have severe constipation after a couple of weeks after birth.At the age of 4 months she was diagnosed with megacolon. We have consulted many doctors. Some said that she has the Hirschsprung’s disease and therefore the surgery is the only solution. Other said that many such surgeries do not bring the expected result, even worse, some children are not able to control stool after such surgeries. Other doctors advised us to not go to surgery, because as she would grow in height, her intestine, being too long now, would grow much slowly and the problem would be solved. Other said that she has gastro duodenal reflux which causes solid stool. We tried many types of diets, fruit, vegetables, juices, but the problem persists and today (the girl is 5 years old) it is even worse, because till now she had very severe constipation only during the winter (very solid stool, sometimes with blood); while during May-October it was relatively well. For the first time this summer she is constipated as during the winter. Due to constipation we often use glycerin suppositories.Because many parents have experienced similar situations, we would appreciate any advices. If she has the Hirschsprung’s disease, how are there explained such different periods (child constipated, usually during the winter and good period during the summer)? Why the stool becomes solid (stones) so quickly, that is one day the stool is normal and the next day it is already very solid? Is this possible due to the gastro duodenal reflux, as some doctors said? Thanks.
I bet be willing to bet that this is from gastro duodenal reflux as the doctor said.
If child constipated is seasonal (worse in winter), it is probably NOT related to a disease. I had constipation in winter for 6 years, and just found a solution. In winter, we get less sunlight. The body uses sunlight to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed to produce the mucus lining of the intestines. This lining is the lubrication to keep things flowing. In studies, rats deprived of vitamin D develop constipation and bloody stools.I have been taking vitamin D3 supplements (1000 IU) every day this winter. This is the first winter in 6 years that I am free of constipation and hemmorhoids.

In reference to the person who had constipation problems,I had the same problem for at least 25 years until I meta nurse, who gave me the phone number of a californiaherb Co. and I didn't have any problems any more.It's called "intestinal FORMULA #1", Dr. Schulze'soriginal clinical formulae.It's a herb, organic and wildharvested herbal formulae that really works very well.I tried them all prior to Dr. schulze's herb and nothingworked for me until I found this pill.

vicious cycle of urinary tract

I am also having trouble with recurrent yeast infections.

 They seem to go away after treatment with either diflucan or monistat however always return within a few days. I have racked my brain trying to figure out what could be the cause. The only thing I have been able to come up with is my frontload washing mashine. This problem started in January when I purchased the new set. They conserve water and do no rinse your clothes well which I believe could be causing the problem. Does anyone else have frontload washing machine that are causing problems?
Hmmm..I haven't thought of this, but I have had a loss of vaginal moisture since february, which now that I read your post is when i purchased my home (which has a front load washing machine). hmmmm....I wonder if this could mean something?!?I;ve changed to front load washing liquid, so seems like the over soapy effect isn't as bad, but hmmm...maybe?
I would recommend . Excellent service, lowest price, product arrives within 2 weeks in plain envelope. They are the sole of discretion. Believe me, I have used them several times, not that I need them but wow. Remember to check your blood pressure first as it can affect your eyesight.

constipation

I was taking senna for a while, now I found out it's not good and I stopped taking it, now I think I have a dependancy, what can I do, to go back to normal, I am trying to increase fiber intake little by little, but it takes a while and I'm worried
That happens alot when you become used to a product. Have you tried one of the products from the Metamucil brand? They can be taken daily, and they are in different flavored forms such as lemonade or cinnamon. They are available in drink powder, fiber caplets and wafers. /our-products.shtml

constipation 3-day combination

Severe constipation helped with 3-day combination

My husband had terrible constipation problems prior to being diagnosed with cancer, then it got worse. We tried many combinations: huge doses of ducolax, phenergan and compazine suppositories, lactulose, Amitiza, magnesium citrate, relistor injections, liquid vitamin C, senexon, docusate, mineral oil and saline enemas, and senecot tea. A senior hospice nurse provided the combination which worked the best and reduced the constipation anxiety greatly: Day 1: Miralax 2 times a day Day 2: Miralax 3 times a day Day 3: A relistor injection or magnesium citrate if needed(NOTE: The relistor injection is amazing for constipation caused by cancer and pain medication but is only helpful if taken every 2 or 3 days; taking it daily does not work.)Expect to have a bowel movement on day 3 and do not worry about days 1 and 2. Or you may find a different combination works better for you, but it is well worth a try.

Young and Sick constipation

About a year ago I started experiencing mild constipation problems, nothing too horrible. However, this past May I was walking aroung fine getting ready to go out on a date, when I was suddenly struck with SEVERE abdominal pain. I spent the next half an hour in the bathroom spastically throwing up, and uncussecfuly trying to go to the bathroom. I soon realized this was not going to go away and had to send for an ambulance. That episode had me in the hospital for a week, where I was constantly on morphine for the pain in my stomach. The end result was the Doctors telling me I had Ischemic Colitis most likley brought on by my birth control and I was sent home. Ischemic colitis for those who do not know is basically where small blood clots are not allowing your intestines enough blood to operate correctly. I have been on birth control since I was 16, and have never experienced constipation problems so I thought it unlikley. However once returning home the pain did go away as well as the ischemic colitis (I am now off of the birth control) but the severe constipation has not. I have told my Gastro Dr this repeatedly and she has just told me to drink Miralax, and more miralax! Well the Miralax is taking days and days to work and I am taking about 3 doses a day.I have also recently had a colonoscopy to see if my ischemic colitis has healed and to check for chrones disease, or other issues. My Doctor has told me that I am perfectly healthy! Since my hospital visit in May I have been to the E.R. twice for abdominal pain. I have been so bloated from not being able to go to the bathroom that my day to day life now is laying on the couch with a heating pad on my stomach and back to try and stop the cramping. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Because I feel like my doctor is giving up on me, and I would like to have my life back!Thank you for reading.
Emily:I had a very similar experience. I was 27 and I had been on birth control for 10 years. All of a sudden I had severe abd pain/cramping, vomiting, and an urge to go to the bathroom but unable to. Ended up in the hospital for a few days and diagnosed with ischemic colitis. It has been a year and I still have issues. At first my Dr. ignored me...so I found a new one. You can have pretty severe IBS for approx a year after the injury. Also, if you have endometrosis or cysts or something female going on....the birth control could have been suppressing that and that could be a cause of your pain. I also eliminated gluten and dairy from my diet. It made a HUGE difference. A proper diet and fluid intake is key. I just had another colonscopy looking to see if I developed a stricture, or ulcers, and to see if my colon was healed. All was well but he did remove 3 pre-cancerous polyps. I guess the silver lining is that the polyps were found and I can keep a close watch on it!! Good luck to you!

Eileen :

Julia:
My wife takes a probiotic supplement called maximum defense and it has greatly helped her with her constipation; she goes regularly everyday now and she has been taking it for almost a year. extreme constipation

Im 15 years old and I am constipated for a couple of months now i use fybogel eat fiber but it dosent always help this constipation is driving me nuts i cant live a normal life like all of the pepole around me i need some good advise plzzzzzzzz this is the worst feeling everrrr i need someones help plase and thank you
I too have severe constipation from a small toddler , my mother had the same problems , my partner works as a technician in the endoscopy dept at royal free hospital so he supplies me with enemas , real strong ones , i take loads painkillers before i take the enema and I brace myself and its extremly painfull and always tears my bum , few stitches later , I do it all again 2/3 months later , I have never pooped on my own .

hi im 14 and have been constipated since i was born i have solutions.1. hot lemon drink2. Corn lots of corn it passes straight thook now my problem i had a "in out stuation". and i have been scared to go to the toilet since 10 days later i need help.

Up until I was 23, I have never been constipated. Suddenly a few weeks before my birthday, I started getting constipated. I took laxatives and then thought I was okay and it would come right back a day later. Ever since thing, I have had to take several doses of Miralax daily. It has been over a year since this first started and I have gone to several doctors. They all run some tests then say they don't know what is my problem. Since I wasn't getting any help from the doctors, I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of. Diet, more water, exercise, limiting certain foods...everything. I've recently dropped out of school and took a leave from work because I am so depressed and stressed with this issue. My constipation has gotten worse to where I can not eat without extreme pain. My stomach is very bloated and it hurts to touch it.:(I am waiting to hear back from Mayo Clinic to see if I can get an appointment there. I'm hoping that they will be able to help me. I know many have dealth with this longer than I have. No one should feel this way. I just don't get how things could have changed so much and no one can figure out why.:(
I have a "twisted" bowel and diverticular disease. While neither alone is life-threatening, the combination makes regularity impossible. High fiber diets actually work against me. My constipation is chronic and will assuredly cause great problems in a few years.I've tried vast amounts and types of fiber, and every home remedy and over-the-counter laxative, stool softener and enema/suppository known to mankind, and short of "surgery a few years down the road", my doctor has never had any good suggestions.About three weeks ago I read about Kefir and decided to try it. At the same time, I added 8 oz of prune juice to my diet and increased my daily water intake to 3 litres (about 100 oz). I REDUCED my fiber intake, to just a normal amount of fruit and veg daily. The result of this daily routine, although not astounding, is far more encouraging than anything I've tried in the past 9 years. I'm not producing MUCH as yet, but what I AM producing is daily, is finally normal in size and consistency, and I'm not straining. This is a MONUMENTAL success, for me.I'm aiming to restore my colon to some semblance of health, using this method. I hope by posting this, that it may help someone else living with chronic constipation.Did your epiphany tell you how the hell one is supposed to overlook the agonizing pain caused by this figment of my imagination??? You apparently have no clue. Oh & Lord Chesterfield obviously nevered suffered from constipation because theres no such thing as "a good nights sleep" when you suffer from constipation!

constipation anyways!!!

What happens with me is I eat lotsa fiber (in cereal fruit and veggies) and I have a normal bowel movement everyday but what I discovered once when felt maybe not really done I used a suppository and was shocked at how constipated I was despite the normal bowel movements.So now even if have normal BM I use a glycerine supossitory and tons of hard small balls come out...and then I use a few more suppositories and each time so many come out and I can feel tummy less tight! So all this time I thought I wasnt constipated but really even if I do a normal even soft bowel movement it doesnt mean that I am not way backed up with all this constipation anyways!!! So now I eat lotsa fiber but want to use a suppository cuz have to get rid of it all, and there is a lot!! WHY AND WHAT DO I DO??? ANYONE HAVE THIS??! I am baffled every time!
Same here. No idea what to do about it but I know that if you use suppositories daily they become less effective.
I wouldn't rely on suppositories either. If your constipation is caused by how you eat, then I would change your diet. I found out that even eating really great fiber, I became constipated because it seems like whole wheat or gluten constipates me.Eating Lots and Lots of Fruits and Veggies is a good idea too along with drinking at least 64 ounces of water daily. You do want to clear out daily and avoid those hard lumps.Understand that if you keep getting constipated you may also develop hemorrhoids or fissure or worse.Lots of great information at & a Smoothie recipe that will really help to stop constipation. http://www.StopConstipation.Net

Constipation Home Remedies

NEVER had problems with constipation until I went to Singapore...sitting on planes for 45 hours in one week. Had a SCAREY constipation, thought I was going to rip apart then afraid I wouldn't. Finally did an oil enema...still difficult but it worked. Since then (oave a yaer ago) I have lumpy hard, dry stools about every other day...HUGE width and very difficult...no bleeding thank god. Dulcolax? Forget it. Prune Juice...useless. Kiwi fruit - nada. Do I need to drink even MORE water? Egads. But to me it looks predictably symptomatic. I DO sit a lot now as classes I teach are online so I am at my desk ten hours a day.Ideas???
oatmeal, fruit, n walk, oatmeal cookies, oatmeal cake, fiber cerely maybe some chinese/mex food. if ya female maybe sum anal sex will help lol
When I suffers constipation problem I used to take solution. It is a natural laxative that regulates the bowel disorders gently and is used for the treatment of constipation.

constipation cured

I have had terrible, chronic constipation for years and have really suffered from it. I finally heard about various things, got online and started reading what other people had tried. I have finally kicked it!!! I can't believe it! I wanted to share with you other suffering souls out there what has worked for me and hopefully it will for you, too! Here is what is working for me.(The things to focus on are the probiotic, the psyllium, the chia seeds, the glucomannan and the prunes.)

Good probiotic 10 minutes before eating anything in a.m.Then, before eating:3 tsp ground psyllium husks (finely milled) & drink at least 8 oz water w 2 tsp apple cider vinegar and a greens powder (for nutrition, absorpbtion and glucose control)Breakfast is a smoothie w/fruits & veggies, whey and rice powders, almond milk and a little regular milk, flavored stevia (chocolate) and 1 tsp of Chia seeds Snack: 1-2 prunes (in shake or by itself) I usually eat this with a few walnuts...yummy!later in day: another tsp of Chia seeds on a mixed salad (could be at lunch or dinner) w/ 8 oz water (or could be any kind of fluid...tea, etc.)evening: 3 capsules of Glucomannan ( a total of 2000 mg)a few hours after evening meal, repeat the psylliumOh, I'm also trying to take enzymes with at least the morning meal....I sometimes forget them but I'm trying to get into the habit of taking them.Also, I bought a jar of sauerkraut because I heard fermented foods are really good for your gut. However, from what I've read, the kind you buy at the store is pasteurized and it kills the beneficial bugs. Instead, I am trying lactic acid yeast wafers made by Standard Process which supposedly accomplish the same thing. Constipation can really wreak havoc with your gut, so it's important to try to reestablish the flora and heal the mucosa by eating organic as much as you can, taking licorice root (check with your doctor), possibly aloe vera (again, check w/ doc).
Also, a teaspon or 2 of apple cider vinegar helps your stomach process the good foods you are eating. As people get older, they have less stomach acid and more insulin resistance. Apple cider vinegar can help with both. Lastly, I haven't really been able to say if eating wheat or not has an effect (meaning bad) but I try to eat other whole grains instead most of the time. Sometimes I eat wheat but not a lot of it.Hope some of this helps you!
Nice to see a success story on constipation. There are lots of constipation remedies out there on the market. I used to have constipation problem. My doc suggest me to get Bidet4me Bidet. Because it helps and increases personal hygiene. I got Non-Electric Bidet MB-2000 Warm Water Spray.

Bowtrol help

Hi Everyone! Has anyone heard of or tried Bowtrol?

I've been doing a ton of research and I've heard that Bowtrol is better. Is this true? I want to start a cleansing product ASAP, but I can't decide between Colonix or Bowtrol. Any suggestions would be great!Thank you!!!
Tatyana I've also done my research and here's what I learned about the 2 products you mentioned. Bowtrol has two ingredients that are known to cause alot of side effects, Senna & Cascara Sagrada. Both ingredients are mild laxative's that can lead to dependancy if used for longer than 7 days. Consult your doctor before using Bowtrol.The main ingredient in Colonix is psyllium, which acts as a 'bulking' agent inside your colon. Psyllium absorbs water and expands to grab hold of any fecal matter inside your colon. One ingredient that concerns is a main concern is Senna in the Kleri-Tea. When used for more than 7days straight, Senna has been known to do bad things within the human body.I recommend looking into cleansers that do not contain any harmful ingredients. Please read my blog for I am about to document my cleansing experience from start to finish.Let me know how yours goes.
 I know several people who personally use Bowtrol including myself. They all have had great results with it. You might have a more serious condition if you experienced all those symptoms. Taking over the counter medicines is 100 times worse for you body then taking all natural things. Rebecca wrote:
I have heard nothing but good things about this product from stories I have heard in person. But when looking on the computer I found some negatives that do concern me a little bit. I have tried it for three days and promise you I have never felt better. I would only use it if a doctor recommends it for you or recommends the ingredients that it contains. I am consulting with a physician today. But so far I have found it to work correctly for me
I heard a lot of positive and negatives about Bowtrol but I know you can find it here

suppressing bowel movement

When I was little I was afraid of clogging up the toilets because my mom would get mad at me, so I suppressed my bowel movements. Now I probably only go once every week and a half because I don't feel the urge to go anymore. How do I get back the urge to defecate?

How is constipation diagnosed?

Being constipated is normal but frequent changes in bowel movement patterns should be taken seriously and should seek doctor's advice.
Ahh, I'm having this problem too! Its been about 3 weeks since I've been. I constantly have the need to go!I have really bad bloating and terrible gas. I can't get a appt for the doctors for another 2 weeks as they are fully booked but I know I can't last the long. Please help, I feel TERRIBLE

If you have constipation

Let's say you have constipation and have a really really hard stool inside. And you know if you pass it you will destroy your rectum due to bleeding on the last pass. Is there a way to soften the current stool or do you have to suffer?
No you don't have to suffer.I used to have the same problem with hard stools and constipation pain - I felt awful.You can soften the stool naturally and then you can "go" like a normal person.:)Look at /28so4b Take care
During the holidays this product totally softened my hardened stools that came eating the usual holiday garbage I could not resist!I tried to eat right over the holidays but it did not work and the constipation was killing me until I used Oxy Powder. I found the best price oxy powder and helpful information from other customers at I hope this helps you.

read this... Beer Helps... i post this in other topicin my case i suffer constipation that leads to Hemorrhoid every time i poo blood comes along...the toilet bowl water turns red...i watch my diet.. eating high on fiber even fruits such papaya but still not effective. Then one time a friend told me to take a beer every night before going to bed. Guess what? It WORKS...in the morning my stool became soft. No more blood. i even poo everyday now thanks to him, thanks to the beer no more expensive medicine just natural alcohol...so to everyone who suffers Hemorrhoid due to constipation do The Filipino Way! Drink 1 to two bottles of beer every night before going to bed. And in the morning or afternoon try to poo(basically you will poo because of beer). Its important to poo everyday to flash toxic and not to make the stool hard.while dringking beer eat dalandan or orange or lemon it will make it more effective.make sure you dont eat to much or heavey during the day...if my method on the first day did not make you pootake senokot its a medicine that helps your vowel go down.

Laxative misery

For years I have had acute constipation especially at the time of my periods. I have tried just about every laxative known to man. Either they give me acute diarrhrea or they don't act at all or they kick in violently at a very inopportune time. I am tired of having to excuse myself from important meetings or simply sitting there perspiring copiously and praying the meeting will end quickly. I have consulted more than one gastroenterologist. I have had colonoscopies and barium enemas and in each case check out with no apparent problems. Each time they write a prescription for some new drug which "will Help". Each time the results are the same as those I indicated above. It is very hard to concentrate on one's work when alternating between feeling bloated or panicky.
I'm 22 and i constipated very badly for 6 months. it was torture. nothing worked - i ate an equivalent of a small forest everyday and metamucil, lansoyl, a papaya a day, you name it i did it. After I took PRIOBIOTIC acidophilis vitamins 3 x a day my digestion improved considerably. these you can buy at the drugstore and its natural vitamins. take one upon waking up, before lunch, and before dinner.

Constipation continuous....

I have been really constipated for about two months now. It is mixed with diahhrea. Most of the time after passing diahhrea I reach a state of constipation and I can't get the rest out. This happens everyday.My insides hurt from the effort and what's worse, I know constantly have the urge to urinate as well. Any thoughts?
I highly recommend you try colon cleansing... those laxatives will put a temporary end to constipation, but cleansing will get to the root of the problem, which is a clogged colon..Making P&B Shakes, and the Colonix Program are two good options.. Check out this review of the best cleansers, if you're too lazy to make ur own fiber shakes
I have been also shopping for a colon cleanse system, I was going crazy, reading all the pro and contra, so what clinched it for me, was the fact, that one can try out the Colonix, from-from Drnatura, and if it doesn't work, one gets the price back. I must say Its working for me, so I think I decided well.

Very helpful colon

What can I use to cleanse my colon?

Very helpful. I have just started a daily fiber regiment today using metamucil, and oatmeal. Apparently, I am supposed to be consuming appx. 30 grams of fiber/day. I am no where near that amount! for the past few months i have been experiencing what i believe to be IBS, where I have loose stool almost constantly. After a little research however, I am back on track.Thanks!

To cure constipation , what to do ?

I was constipated for 30 years! Nothing worked. Went to several doctors. Finally I found out myself what was wrong! I was on vacation and was fine. I get back home and the trouble started again!I started to think....what is it that I ate differently on vactaion??I finally figured it out!!! I did not have 1 glass of milk the whole week!I immediately stopped drinking milk and now my 30 year issue is solved! I replace the milk (to get enough calcium) with calcium fortified OJ and supplements.
Its important to poo everyday to flash toxic and not to make the stool hard.while dringking beer eat dalandan or orange or lemon it will make it more effective.
I'm 22 with constipation very badly for 6 months. it was torture. nothing worked - i ate an equivalent of a small forest everyday and metamucil, lansoyl, a papaya a day, you name it i did it. After I took PRIOBIOTIC acidophilis vitamins 3 x a day my digestion improved considerably. these you can buy at the drugstore and its natural vitamins. take one upon waking up, before lunch, and before dinner. ALSO flax seed helps a lot, make sure its cold when you drink it (in cold-room temperature apple juice, mix it in). Take about two tablespoons of flax seed per day (made sure its already ground up, like powder). The turning point came after my colonscopy, when I had to starve for 30 hours. After my stomache was cleared of all the crap in there, and I took flax seed and acidophilis, everyday my life is a joy. I recommend fasting/starving for a day or so to clear your system naturally (I did take pico salax - a strong laxative for my colonscopy, however, and my stomache was cleared). just drink chicken soup the whole day and lots of water during that time. After that day, load up with the flax seed and acidophilis vitamins. This is the thing that cure constipation

If you do a google or yahoo search you can find it by searching for maximum defense probiotic.Good luck in your search

Constipation during pregnancy

Pregnant women will experience constipation during pregnancy in the later trimesters. This may be uncomfortable for pregnant women but there are ways to treat them. Doctors would usually recommend pregnant women to take high fiber and add them in their diet.
Constipation can result in hemorrhoids and anal fissures if not treated.It is best to treat the condition with "natural" methods.
- I’m almost 13 weeks pregnant now. I had bad constipation in pregnancy[/url] and tried many of the typical remedies. My aunt just told me an old wives' tale to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything else. I've tried this for nearly 2 weeks and so far it seems to be working. My trips to the bathroom are now every 2-3 days as opposed to every 5 days before. And if I get especially gassy or bloated, I follow up the water with a 1/2 cup of prune juice and I'm good to "go" in a few hours or the next day. I never drink more than a 1/2 cup of prune juice because I end up with diarrhea.

Fighting constipation Restoralax

Constipation ,Help

I need opinions and advice. My doctor switched me from ex lax to restoralax and I have not felt so miserable for a long time.Has anyone else been totally sick with retained fluid, severe gas to the point their back and shoulders have hurt, abdominal pain, and severe nausea? My doc wants me to take this and I am at the end of my rope hoping my body will get used to it. I sit and cry I feel so awful. It has been about a month and I drink around 3 litres of water a day.Thanks|||That is NOT good. Does your doctor know what severe reactions you are having? It sounds to me like it's not the medicine for you. You seem to have the problems they warn about on the information sheet that comes with it. Read the information sheet that comes with RestoraLax and then talk to your pharmacist and your doctor. For me it has been a magic bullet with no side effects at all - I've had severe constipation from having to take high doses of narcotic pain meds and RestoraLax has ended that completely - no pain, no bloating, no gas, no more constipation - just easy comfortable regular bowel movements for the first time in over 4 years.|||How long before restorealax take effect?|||For me it usually works within 8 to 12 hours. As it says at http://chealth.canoe.ca/drug_info_details.asp... It may take 2 to 4 days for this medication to work.(I think that means initially)I also have found that I only need to take it about 4 days out of 7 and I usually take it at about 10pm mixed with fruit juice. It is however tasteless and odourless.|||thank you for your reply. I ended up quitting it and now take Milk of Magnesia and have started a drug called resolor. Not impressed with the resolor but we have to try.I am also fighting constipation from narcotic pain meds.

Constipation and Yoga

Constipation and Yoga

Let me give you my background:-Constipated since January. -Diagnosed with GERD 4 years ago.-taking prilosec daily-taking Miralax every morning (same with Metamucil)-eating a bland high fiber diet -taking Colace every nightAll this on top of college life and work. Exercising wasn't easy or practical for me with so much build up, back up, and so little time. Beginning in January, I spent most of my time in bed feeling not only sick, but also fat, immobile, unhealthy, unattractive and abnormal.All that has changed and all it took was a youtube search and the reminder that, for me, 40 minutes once a day spent focused on my HEALTH instead of work or friends would have lasting benefits that made everything else more enjoyable, even easy. And it has!Yes, that's right.Go to to LEARN How To Treat Your Constipation And Other Digestive Problems NATURALLY. Youtube. I'm not hawking a class or a teacher. I can't afford either. Instead, I found a 40 minute free beginner video, and I do it in my dorm room once a day. I always feel great once I'm done. It has only been a few days, but my bowels have been moving from the day I started, and I finally had my first complete evacuation since January. It doesn't exacerbate my GERD, either. I would recommend Yoga to anyone, though I'd caution you to start S-L-O-W.Sickat20I'm a yoga fan myself-- on and off. But I know that when I regularly practice yoga, I always feel a lot better and more relaxed.I've never tried using it for constipation purposes but good to know it has worked for you.Constipation and Yoga

solutions to constipation

Hey guys’, reading through heaps of forums on the net about this problem and there some weird and wacky solutions to constipation. I went through constipation myself for about 8 months of 2010. Gruelling time of my life and the more stressed I got about it, the worst it got. Anyway, this is what I did to overcome it completely.Breakfast: One bowl of “Uncle Tobys: Fibre Plus”. It doesn’t matter what cereal you get, it has to be around 16g of fibre per 100g. It doesn’t taste nice so I put honey on it.Morning tea: An apple and green tea.Lunch: Whatever you want.5:20pm: When I Get home from work I drink 250ml of v8 juice original. It’s the one with 3 serves of vegetables per serve. With the v8 juice I have a men’s multivitamin tablet from Cenovis and a 1500mg fish oil tablet. After that, I have a 850ml Jim Beam jug I got from a nightclub and I fill it up with water and drink 2 of them a day. Seriously, everyday I try and drink 1.7lt of water. I hate drinking water and the v8 juice so I neck it as quickly as I can and follow it with coffee or tea.6.30pm: GymDinner: What ever you want… Including desertI did that routine for 4 weeks and I’m back to normal. Sorry to say; but this is the routine I’ve incorporated completely and I generally stick to it. Like an ex-con doesn’t wanna go back to gaol, I don’t wanna go back to being constipated.

What is Constipation?

Constipation means having difficulty passing stools or having a hard bowel movement. People experiencing constipation usually have dry bowel movements that gives them painful and difficulty in passing stools.

Yay I am unconstipated! I have some tips

Hey!I have been constipated for over 2 weeks, and don't find me weird by saying this but for like the 13th day I made one small dropping. It was pretty bad, the bloating was horrible, and I had the urge to go but nothing came out. I was on a laxative pill, but still no go. Then I took this liqued laxative, and another dropping. Then I increased the dosage the next day and I went! Yay! lol. Here are my suggestions for severe constipation:-Eat shredded mini wheats cereal -Truly helps-Liqued stool softener/laxative -Seems to hit your system faster (For me 5 hours about)-This may sound silly but, if you find yourself in one of those "half in half out" situations, try to sing it seems to nerve your system up alot! lol.
I am really constipated too & I have been trying to go but, nothing will come out. The last time I had this problem I had a ovarian cist.. I need help && fast. Im only 17 & im tired of this~

But my father (he's a doctor) doesn't like me doing these things so now i'm back to being constipated and i'm really doing everything I can...eating fruits, wheat and fiber but it doesn't seem to work!!!!!
I have been constipated for 2 months..

Best Fiber supplements for relief of constipation

Best Fiber supplements for relief of constipation
I highly recommend this supplement /vitolax.php One of the components of this stuff is isabgol. It acts as a high fiber bulk forming laxative. Have a nice stool :)
Constipation is a symptom of something else. It is not a curable condition - although it might disappear when you sort out the underlying problem - whatever that may be.Fibre is good as a general thing, but it would be better to have a good lifestyle (diet, exercise, water, less stress, etc
I have tried it all, and found the solution was so simple! I have been in agony for years with constipation. Sometimes only one BM in a week. I didn't want to leave the house, I was afraid of impaction and actually had several. I tried all kinds of fruits, juices, prune juice, kiwis, I took laxatives, metamucil, exercised, and the only thing that half-way worked was salba (chia) seeds. Then a miracle. I heard about Q-10 (the pure form, ubiquinol). One little gelcap a day, it takes about 5 days to get it really working in your system, and I have had an easy BM every day since, with the exception of missing it a day or two, and I went right back to constipation. I don't miss it anymore. Even the regular drug store kind will work, but is not as sure as the pure form. It is available at health food stores online (Swanson, Puritan Pride, etc.) You will be amazed
Hello, you might want to try our product. It has been proven effective to those who are constipated./firstvita Thanks!
No more laxatives or pills for me. I soak chia seeds in water until they do not absorb anymore. I keep a contianer of them in my fridge. Whenever I get a drink of juice or water I put a large dollup of the chia gel into it and drink it up. I am assured the seeds are not absorbing any body fluid because they are already soaked to capacity. I am now very regular for the first time in years. I suffered from chronic constipation and dry hard stools that were difficult to pass. I think these seeds add all the natural lubrication I needed. They are all natural and I can buy them in the natural food section of the grocery store or any natural food store. It takes about 4 days to kick in if you have constipation, so if you try this, don't give up too soon. you will thank me!

Does Alcohol Cause Constipation?

Alcohol inhibits digestion, causes dehydration, depresses glucose metabolism, and compromises the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The cumulative impact of these factors is behind chronic constipation related to alcohol abuse.

 Here are the primary reasons why does alcohol cause constipation?

 ● Alcohol dehydrates your body just as reliably as a sauna does. That is why your mouth feels so dry the morning after. Cause-and-effect: Once your body becomes dehydrated, it works overtime to recover fluids and electrolytes from anywhere it can find them, including from the content of your bowels. As a result, stools become dry, hard, and painful to pass. So don‘t be surprised — pardon my French — over your crap getting just as dry as your mouth.
● Alcohol suppresses intestinal peristalsis and kills the urge to move your bowels for the same reason it turns off your good judgment. Cause-and-effect: Failure to move your bowels on schedule enlarges, impacts, and hardens up already dried out stools until they become impossible to pass out without straining and causing yourself anorectal damage — two problems that commonly precede chronic constipation.
● Alcohol causes the loss of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, that are essential to retain moisture in stools.Cause-and-effect: Water retention in the body and stools requires sodium and potassium, the minerals known as electrolytes and aren‘t stored in the body the same long-term way as calcium or magnesium. Since alcohol stimulates profuse urination, and, often, diarrhea and vomiting, these minerals are quickly lost. In turn, the body recovers lost electrolytes from feces, making them just as hard, dry, and abrasive as prune pits. Just imagine the aftereffects of squeezing out these pits from your poor drunken ass!
● Alcohol in excess causes profuse vomiting that precipitates all of the above conditions. Cause-and-effect: Alcohol inhibits stomach digestion, and causes delayed stomach emptying — a condition known as gastroparesis. After about 8 to 10 hours inside the stomach, undigested proteins start to rot. The exceptionally poisonous byproducts of rotting provoke violent vomiting, that cause an extensive loss of fluids and electrolytes, and I have already explained what this double jeopardy does for constipation.
● Alcohol affects your blood sugar level to such an extent, that it may cause loss of bowel function control, and cause diarrhea, with the same side effects as vomiting. Cause-and-effect: Just like your knees go weak on you from too much booze, so does your bowel. The ensuing inability to retain the bowel‘s content may cause diarrhea. In turn alcohol-induced diarrhea and vomiting, may cause severe inflammation of the entire GI tract, and fester for some time. This condition, known as gastroenterocolitis, is squarely behind irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease, associated with alternating patterns of chronic constipation and diarrhea. Alcohol can lower blood sugar to a dangerous level, and a person can loose consciousness momentarily — a condition called syncope. A syncope may also lead to profuse diarrhea, and all that follows.
● Alcohol is often used to self-medicate stress and depression. Since both of these conditions are also implicated in constipation, alcohol only makes it worse.Cause-and-effect: Depression is commonly accompanied by irregularity and constipation even without alcohol. After a while, the sparks begin to fly from one‘s eyes not only from a stiff one, but also from straining too hard, making both — constipation and depression — even more severe.
● Finally, alcohol is behind inflammatory bowel disease that is also instrumental in constipation, and is the number one cause of non-genetic colorectal cancer.Cause-and-effect: All of the above aftereffects of alcohol consumption. So, if you can‘t say ‘no‘ to one too many Martinis or Manhattans, visit this page to learn how to mop up after your youthful indiscretions and mature indulgences… Cheers and good luck!RecommendationsYou already know without my council that it is best not to drink yourself into a stupor extending all the way down to the gut! So, I'll skip moralizing on the merits and demerits of alcohol consumption, and, instead, will give you some practical and gut-saving advice:
● Concentrate on hydration. This means drinking good quality mineral water on an empty stomach, several hours before food and alcohol, so the water and minerals have a chance to assimilate into the blood and tissues.
● Increase salt intake. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt (2.5 g) to each glass of water (250 ml) — sodium chloride is essential to retain all that water in the body, otherwise you'll urinate most of it out as soon as it gets assimilated into the blood.
● Find a good balance to your water intake. If you drink too little — you'll get dehydrated quickly, if you drink too much, you'll dehydrate yourself from urinating more. The optimal amount will depend on your age, weight, gender, diet, climate, water's mineral count, and salt intake. Keep experimenting until you'll find a good balance
● 'Empty stomach' is the key. When the stomach is full with food and alcohol, it won't let water pass into the intestines, and you will dilute your digestive juices by drinking water, causing yourself even more problems with indigestion. Restrain fluids once you start drinking alcohol and/or eating.
● Avoid proteins during 'heavy' drinking. Meat, fish, seafood, fowl, and nuts are the worst food to eat when drinking hard, because they require lots of time to become digested, especially when alcohol is added to the mix. Uptake of the body's own fluids for digestion makes dehydration even worse, while a 'locked-up' stomach and slow digestion prevent you from rehydrating
.● Rehydrate on an empty stomach. Do not start rehydrating until the stomach is empty, otherwise you are going to vomit. In some instances, it is actually better to vomit out the undigested content of the stomach, than wait for the rotten mess inside to get digested and assimilated.
● Purge yourself if necessary. If you wish to abort the agony of a hangover, drink rapidly several glasses of bottled (not mineral) water with salt (1% by volume), and it will induce vomiting. If not, it means your stomach is already empty, and that the water along with the salt will quickly rehydrate you.
● Salt is a hangover's best friend. Always drink water with added salt to rehydrate. When doctors pump water into the patient via IV, the solution contains 0.9% of sodium chloride, a.k.a. table salt. Drinking plain water will only intensify urination (by diluting blood chemistry), and speed up dehydration.
● The gut ain't a straight pipe. You can't overcome constipation by drinking more. The intestines are not a straight pipe, and the body doesn't work that way. Either you'll need a laxative, or, for a safer approach, use Hydro-C instead. In addition to softening up your stools, Hydro-C will also mineralize your body with essential calcium, magnesium, and potassium, that are rapidly lost with the excess urination stimulated by alcohol.
● Supplement water-soluble vitamins and minerals. To prevent a broad range of disorders caused by vitamin C and B-group vitamins deficiency, take high-quality multivitamins, such as these Morning and Evening packs. This is because alcohol affects the digestion, assimilation, and/or synthesis of these health-critical vitamins. The calcium and magnesium in these packs is essential in preventing kidney stones, osteoporosis, osteomalacia (bone softening), periodontal disease, and tooth loss.
● Go easy on carbs. Finally, while consuming alcohol, restrain the consumption of carbohydrates, because this combo leads to weight gain, elevated triglycerides, inhibits blood circulation (particularly when dehydrated), and commonly causes a 'fatty liver' condition that is quite deadly, especially along with the deficiency of essential B-complex vitamins. If you are past 45-50, the sum total of carbs and booze is the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes “the morning after."All of the above recommendations will also reduce the drunkenness, the severity of the hangover, long-term health damage, and, of course, the risk of constipation, hemorrhoids, and colorectal cancer. What can be worse than the indignity of having a hangover and constipation all at the same time?Chin-chin!

Doctors Recommend Fiber For Constipation

In turn, doctors recommend fiber for constipation because that is what is written up in all medical references and textbooks, even though every single piece of independent research states emphatically: — Fiber causes constipation and related colorectal disorders. — Fiber doesn‘t relieve constipation or improves motility. — Fiber is squarely behind colorectal cancer. To learn more why independent scientists and the Federal Drug Administration is against using fiber for constipation, please visit this page! Good luck!Additional CommentaryOn the one hand, medical schools teach students that bowels contain innate bacteria, that these bacteria are critical to health, that antibiotics routinely kill this bacteria along with their intended target, wreaking all kinds of havoc in the process. On the other hand, the American Medical Association and, consequently, the American doctors with an M.D. title next to their names, do not recognize disbacteriosis — that is the term for a dead bacteria condition — as a legitimate medical disorder. Go figure… Since it is next to impossible to find an American child or adult nowadays, who hasn‘t taken antibiotics at least once or twice, or hasn‘t been exposed to traces of antibiotics in meat, dairy, poultry, and farmed fish, it is safe to presume that almost all Americans suffer from disbacteriosis. Add to this the tens of millions of Americans who are getting exposed 24/7 to mercury in dental amalgam. True, mercury preserves cavities from further decay, but it also destroys gut bacteria in the same way as does the mercury from a broken thermometer or in tuna fish. These bacteria protect bowel mucosa from inflammation, polyps, and cancers. They make the essential vitamins K and biotin, and govern fagocitosis — a term for primary immunity response. In addition to these life-critical tasks, bacteria also give stools their soft, amorphous shape and moisture by retaining water and minerals. According to the medical textbooks, healthy bowels are supposed to contain over 450 strains of intestinal bacteria, and they compose 50 to 75% of dry stools by weight. After the bacteria are gone, stools become small, dry, and hard, pebble-like. So, to fix this anomaly, doctors recommend insoluble fiber, commonly found in fruits, vegetables, and grains, because fiber enlarges stools by retaining water in them.Since larger stools cause internal hemorrhoids from straining and narrow an already narrow anal canal even more, constipation gradually sets in. At this point doctors recommend adding soluble fiber, because it blocks the absorption of fluids inside the bowel, and acts as a potent laxative. Psyllium found in Metamucil is one of the most versatile laxatives because it contains plenty of both fibers — soluble and insoluble. Thus, by recommending fiber, doctors are able to overcome not only the side effects of antibiotics, but also most other drugs that affect muscle tone and nerve sensitivity, and, in turn, diminish the bowel‘s peristalsis and suppress the natural urge to move your bowels. These are the drugs used for blood pressure, cholesterol reduction, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxieties, depression, Parkinson‘s, and many others. In essence, by replacing the dead bacteria in stools, dietary fiber has been covering up the complicity of most drugs in constipation and bowel disorders, even though it is against the law to even mention fiber in connection to constipation. Obviously, I haven‘t made that law – the Food and Drugs Administration did, and any doctor or nutritionist who recommends fiber for regularity or constipation relief, violates that law and commits professional malpractice. Some legal purists may argue: this law applies only to supplement labels. Come on, give me a break! If a supplement label can‘t say “Fiber relieves constipation” without violating the law, then the same law applies to all other uses of fiber in connection to constipation. If this was otherwise in a country governed by English laws, I too could use my former Russian driver's license to run red lights with impunity, because the law doesn‘t explicitly mention a jerk driving around with a foreign driver's license! So, what should you do if you rely on fiber in food or supplements to move your bowels, or use laxogenic food, such as prune juice, prunes, oats, and fiber-fortified morning cereals? The answer is obvious: stop doing it because fiber gradually leads to dependence and addiction by stretching out the colon, narrowing down the anal canal, and causing anorectal nerve damage. In turn, these irreversible changes make constipation more severe and cause further colorectal damage, such as diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, and cancers. To wean yourself from self-destructive fiber dependence, review this page first: Overcoming Fiber Dependence. It explains how to normalize stools, restore intestinal flora, and maintain regularity without fiber and laxatives.If you are already affected by constipation

Does Stress Cause Constipation ?

Chronic and sporadic stress disrupt regular bowel movements and contribute to constipation.

Adding fiber, fluids, and laxatives to alleviate constipation makes it worse, and perpetuates stress even more. The information on this page will help you break this vicious cycle.Problems watching? View onYouTube.Transcript:Yes, it does, and very significantly.
● First, ongoing low-level stress and anxiety suppress the gastrocolic reflex — an unconscious action by the gastrointestinal tract that precedes a bowel movement;Cause and effect: This happens for several, biological, evolutionary, and personality-type reasons. According to researchers, personality “accounted for about as much variance in stool output as did dietary fiber.” And from what we already know about fiber‘s profound laxative effective, that‘s saying a lot! As you can see, following the “don‘t worry, be happy” advice stands true for constipation as well.
● Second, people in moderate-stress situations, such as weddings, entrance exams, lawsuits, job problems, and endless others tend to suppress the urge to move their bowels; Cause and effect: If you let the stress to interrupt essential bathroom breaks, you turn yourself into what is known as a “tight ass” personality-type! Tight ass once, tight ass twice, and constipation becomes life‘s permanent companion! It happens because suppressing bowel movements, even once, enlarges and hardens up stools. In turn, larger stools necessitate straining. Straining leads to enlarged internal hemorrhoids and anorectal nerve damage. This causes incomplete emptying, that makes stools even larger, and —… Bingo! You are reading this transcript…
● Third, a truly high stress situation often causes diarrhea that, in turn, disrupts bowel movements and results in constipation;Cause and effect: I explain the reasons behind this phenomenon here. But that is usually not the end of it, because diarrhea causes the disruption of bowel movements, contributes to nerve damage, enlarged hemorrhoids, and may lead to inflammatory bowel disease, that, in turn, sets up an alternating pattern of diarrhea and constipation for the rest of one‘s shortened life.
● Fourth, many people under stress seek relief by taking medication for depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, or simply self-medicate themselves with illicit drugs or alcohol; Cause and effect: All of these lifestyle enhancers not only blunt life‘s stresses, but also the entire GI tract, and that is why constipation is one of the most prominent side effects of mood-enhancing drugs, whether prescription or illicit. Alcohol action is even worse — it dehydrates stools and suppresses intestinal peristalsis all at once.All of the above equally applies to infants, toddlers, children, adults, and particularly to seniors, who are already affected by many other problems related to constipation. Sorry, I can‘t help you to reduce stress, but eliminating constipation certainly will take the brunt of it! To learn more about the connection between stress and constipation, and how to prevent or reverse stress-related constipation, please visit this page for additional information. Good luck!RecommendationsStress tends to recede and go away, but not constipation. Once it hits you, it tends to linger for the rest of your life, and to get more severe with each passing year for reasons I explain on The Bulls' S..t In The China Shop page.Here is what you can do to prevent this from happening to you:
● Since moving the bowels is mainly a subconscious process — consciousness can only interrupt the bowel movement already in progress, — it may mean that you are suppressing the 'emerging' urge to move the bowels while under stress. Therefore, be aware of this distinct possibility, and don't do it
.● In general, getting constipated while under stress suggests that you are already affected by latent constipation. In this case, you should follow the steps outlined here: No Downsize, Just Upside-down to eliminate latent constipation.
● If you don't have time or inclination to study this site, or under too much duress to tackle 'crapology,' start from using all or some of the components of the Colorectal Recovery Kit to eliminate immediate constipation, as well as to begin the process of healing and reconditioning the bowel. The actual choice of components depends on the severity and duration of your constipation.

Why Do Some Foods Cause Constipation?

Only one 'food' component that may cause constipation

— indigestible fiber. Too much fiber leads to bowel obstruction, too little indicates bowel dependence. All other natural foods digest near completely, and don't play any role in forming stools. In fact, if your stool test shows any remnants of fats, proteins, or carbohydrates, it means you are affected by a severe malabsorption disorder, ranging from gastroenterocolitis to liver or pancreatic cancer.Problems watching? View onYouTube.Transcript:Any medical reference or web site you check, you usually read about some foods that cause constipation… Among the guiltiest are the usual suspects: white rice, whole milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, red meat, bananas, carrots, high fat food, and so on…Actually, none of these foods can cause constipation anymore than wind or water. That is because none of them ever reach the colon undigested. That much is written in any textbook on human physiology and/or gastric disorders, and any physician or nutritionist claiming otherwise must go back to school! What little remains from digested foods is called ash, and ash represents between 0.2% and 1.2% of total stool weight. This means if you eat a pound of meat, cheese, or rice, only one teaspoon of ash, about 5 grams, will reach your bowels, not enough to play any role in a bowel movement or constipation. In fact, the only food that can cause constipation is dietary fiber because it is the only known food that reaches the colon undigested! If you think you‘ve misheard me, I repeat again: dietary fiber Is the only food that causes constipation. That is because if you eat one pound of fiber, the exact same pound will reach your bowel undigested. Along the way it will absorb water and expand 5 to 10 times its original size and weight. After these 5 to 10 pounds of, pardon me, heavy crap, get stuck in your bowel, you too will get stuck in the bathroom, because normal stools shouldn‘t be larger than your middle finger and heavier than 100-150 grams or 3 to 5 ounces per bowel movement. To learn more about this paradox, please visit this page. It will also teach you how to wean yourself from fiber dependence, and more damage! Good luck!RecommendationsIf you still doubt my words, and I am sure you do doubt them seriously, let me ask you these five simple questions: 1. How come healthy breastfed infants enjoy several bowel movements daily, while breast milk — the only food they eat — is a zero-fiber, zero-residue, high-fat product? 2. Or, how come people who fast for medical or religious reasons for extended periods of time have regular, albeit smaller, bowel movements throughout the fast, even though they take nothing by mouth, but water? Do they have bowels different from yours?3. Or, how come the Inuit — the indigenous people of the Arctic region of Canada, Greenland, and Alaska, who in their natural habitat eat a high-fat, zero-fiber diet their entire lives, and never experience constipation? Do they have bowels different from yours? 4. Or, how come Japanese people, who eat mostly fatty fish and white rice, and almost no fiber, enjoy better health and longer lives than most Americans? Do they have bowels different from yours? 5. Or, how come, a good number of people who have succeeded on Atkins-style diets, have normal stools with zero fiber in their diet? Do these lucky bastards have bowels different from yours?The proper answer to all of these rhetorical questions: Of course, not! All human bowels are exactly the same from birth, except some are healthier than others. And the reason none of these people ever experience constipation is simply this: — Healthy stools contain no food remnants, and a healthy bowel doesn‘t require any food remnant to function properly. Stools aren‘t made from food, unless these foods contain indigestible fiber. I repeat again:Natural every day foods play no role in constipation development, unless these foods contain dietary fiber!If and when consuming zero- or near zero-fiber foods — such as whole milk, cheese, meats, white rice, bananas, and so on — this results in constipation, it means that your normal bowel function has been already compromised by a combination of factors, such as a high fiber diet, antibiotics, mercury fillings, prescription drugs, straining, muscular dystrophy, nerve damage, and/or various other, similar factors. It also means that you are already affected bylatent constipation, which, in turn, is highly dependent on a daily intake of fiber-dense foods to plunge out the stools.If you are freaking out from hearing what you believe to be sheer heresy, let me throw at you one last question: — Why do doctors prescribe a zero fiber diet to all patients who are admitted to hospital with bowel disorders? Okay, I‘ll help you with the answer. They prescribe a fiber-free diet because it is the only way to quickly stabilize the patient by relieving the gas, bloating, cramping, and intestinal inflammation caused by any fiber bulk and fermentation. To learn more about normal bowel function, why natural foods play no role in constipation, and how to eliminate constipation without resorting to fiber and laxatives, review this first: Stool Composition.If you are already affected by constipation, and require immediate relief, start here: Colorectal Recovery Kit, and select all or some of the kit's components to fit your particular circumstances.If you would like to eliminate the underying causes of constipation, and prevent further colorectal damage, begin here: No Downsize, Just Upside-down.And if you are a natural skeptic, and trust no one, or question my motives because I recommend supplements on this site, then follow your doctor's advice to the tee, don't eat foods that “cause constipation.”

What Are The Causes Of Constipation In Older Children?

Older children are affected by constipation just as often and just as badly as adults, and for all the same reasons — bad medical advice, dietary fiber, over-hydration, addiction to laxatives, environmental pollutants, and stress. There is only one way to prevent and reverse it — do everything the opposite to what pediatricians and nutritionists recommend. So, please consult your child‘s doctor immediately to rule out or treat organic causes. Fortunately, they are very rare, especially in children.On the other hand, functional constipation among teens and pre-teens is just as widespread as among adults. I have identified the following major causes of functional constipation among older children:
● The first place belongs to incorrect medical and dietary advice, particularly regarding a high fiber diet;
● Next are large and heavy stools, or hard stools regardless of their size;
● Straining while moving the bowels is a common contributor as well;
● Pain and bleeding which results from straining while moving the bowels usually follows it;
● Next prominent factor is related to antibacterial medication and mercury fillings;
● Then, of course, conscious withholding of stools because of pain or concerns over hygiene;
● Crash diets are big among teenagers, particularly young girls;
● Next is chronic stress, which is, unfortunately, so common among children today;
● Naturally, medication for depression and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders follow stress.
● Addiction to over-the-counter laxatives is also a prominent factor;
● Finally, food allergies that cause inflammatory bowel disease, manifested by an alternating pattern of diarrhea and constipation are a factor.This list covers the majority of reasons behind functional constipation in older children. All other causes are mainly derivative from this list. Assuming you know what to look for, what to do, and what not, functional constipation in children is relatively simple to prevent and reverse. The good news is: it is easier to reverse because children enjoy robust digestion, supple intestines, undamaged bowels, good muscle tone, highly sensitive nerve endings, a steady schedule, and aren‘t yet as inhibited by social mores as are adults. Well, the bad news is: the dominant medical advice to treat constipation with more fiber, more fluids, and more exercise is grossly incorrect. If your child follows it, the constipation will get only worse, because fiber enlarges and hardens up stools even more, excess water dries them up, and exercise only increases straining and pain. From that point on, your child will be at the mercy of laxatives, drugs, and doctors for the rest of his or her life — something I don‘t wish on any child or parent.If you doubt my words, please consult the Federal Drugs Administration web site. It is against the law to claim that the fiber in food or laxatives prevents or relieves constipation. So, anyone recommending fiber for constipation, is, in fact, violating federal law, and, of course, I didn‘t make that law, the FDA did! Functional constipation has a natural tendency to turn into a chronic, life-long affliction, and it may significantly impact on the self-esteem, development, growth potential, health, and quality of life of your son or daughter. So, don‘t let it fester unattended and ruin the rest of their promising lives… To learn how to anticipate, prevent, and overcome all of the above causes of constipation, please review this page. Good luck!RecommendationsThe recommendations to overcome constipation for older children (3+) are similar to my recommendations for adults, except you have to be extra vigilant with children because not fixing up constipation quickly may lead to irreversible life-long auto-immune inflammatory bowel disorders, such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, as well as 'mechanical' disorders, such as enlarged hemorrhoids, the loss of anorectal sensitivity, enlarged bowel, and others.If your child is already affected by constipation, please follow my recommendations here:No Downside, Just Upside-down. It will guide you to all other relevant sources of information.If you are too busy to read and study all of the above, depending on the degree of severity and your child's age, use all or some of the components of the Colorectal Recovery Kit to relieve and eliminate the mechanical (large, hard, or dry stools, pain) and physiological (disbacteriosis, inflammation, nerve damage) causes of constipation. If caught early, constipation rarely becomes a chronic condition in children simply because they enjoy the ability to recover from disease far fully than grown adults.To get a better retrospective (going backward to seek out probable causes) and prospective (going forward to eliminate potential causes) analysis on what may have precipitate constipation in your child and what you should expect if you fail to heed my warnings, please review the following sections . All That Goodness Gone To the RatsFinally, note that constipation is a 'familial' condition, meaning it is all too often passed from parents to children simply because they all share think-a-like doctors, similar attitudes towards 'bathroom duties,' an identical diet, and the same bad habits. My mother, for example, taught me to withhold bowel movements even before I entered elementary school because she didn't want me to use any bathroom, but at home. Not surprisingly, I was already affected by enlarged hemorrhoids by the time I was 18, first experienced the brunt of chronic constipation in my twenties, but still — not knowing any better — kept withholding stools waiting for the 'right bathroom' or 'better time' until one day, in my mid-forties, I stopped experiencing the urge to move my bowels altogether.Lo and behold, for as long as I remember my mother, I recall her endless obsession with laxatives medicines, herbs, and teas, oatmeal, laxogenic juices, and fiber. Later on I learned that she was affected by severe rectocele — a condition occurring when a wall of fibrous tissue that separates the rectum from vagina — bulges into the vagina. Rectocele in older women, whose tissues are no longer as elastic, results from the continuous presence of large formed stools in the rectum, and the pressure from straining to expunge them. Normally, the rectum is supposed to be free of any stool. If you don't wish anything like this to happen to your daughter or yourself, never teach children to withhold stools.Thus, if your child is getting constipated, there is a good reason to suspect that you too may be affected by 'latent constipation.

Why Is My Toddler Suddenly constipation

The wrong medical advice is behind chronic constipation in toddlers. Recommended dietary changes not only do not resolve constipation, but also may result in diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, and development problems caused by the ensuing malnutrition. Why Is My Toddler Suddenly Constipated?Problems watching? View onYouTube.Transcript:The primary cause of constipation in toddlers is pain while moving the bowels. This pain is caused by stools that are either too large or too hard to pass out effortlessly. Hard stools don‘t have to be large to cause pain.After experiencing pain, children commonly suppress and withhold stools, which is usually self-evident from observing their behavior. In turn, withheld stools dry out and harden up, making the next bowel movement even more painful. All other causes of a toddler‘s constipation are derivative from the moment of experiencing that first pain. If you follow the standard medical advice —“Constipation is the result of behavior or a lack of fluids and fiber in the diet [link]”, — and begin giving your child more water and fiber, — you‘ll accomplish the complete opposite outcome: fiber will increase stool size even more while excess water will dry out and harden them up.In fact, this absurd recommendation — unheard of just two generations ago — is the primary reason behind the raging epidemics of autism and juvenile diabetes in the United States. And there is absolutely no way you can change your child‘s behavior or prevent constipation without first normalizing his or her stools, and eliminating any source pain. Bathroom training, behavior modification, diet change, and all other recommendations should come next… Remember, infants and toddlers don‘t move their bowels consciously, but the bowels move themselves! The moment consciousness kicks in for whatever reason, that‘s when kids run into problems… To learn how to normalize stools without fiber and laxatives, and to understand why fiber may cause autism and juvenile diabetes, please visit my web site. In turn, I wish you and your children good health and good luck!RecommendationsThe transition from nursing (breast milk or formula) to solid foods increases the prevalence of pediatric constipation from 3% to 10%. It seems strange — how can solid food increase constipation more than fluids alone — because most people assume that there is a connection between foods and stools while there is none. I address this paradox in the Infant Constipation section.So, what are the differences between nursing and a solid food diet that may contribute to constipation?— Reduced fat content. Solid food fat content is usually lower than in breast milk or formula at 4.4%, or about 20 g to 30 g daily. Among all the other nutrients, dietary fat plays the key role in initiating bowel movements. I describe the role of fat in this processhere.— Introduction of dietary fiber. Indigestible fiber disrupts bowel movements more than any other factor because it increase the size, weight, and density of stools, and these stools are painful to move. I describe the role of fiber in the etiology of constipationhere. Fortified morning cereals are the primary source of dietary fiber in children's nutrition.— Food allergies. Solid food, particularly processed, such as morning cereals, pasta, bread, cookies, ice cream, yogurt, and fresh fruits, vegetables, and juices introduce children to a range of exceptionally allergenic nutrients, such as plant proteins (gluten), soluble fiber additives to processed dairy, vegetable oils, animal casein, aromatic oils, artificial flavorings, preservatives, fillers, and the inevitable impurities related to mass agriculture and industrial processing. In turn, these allergies often cause diarrhea — the body's inflammatory response to allergens and an ensuing inability to absorb digestive fluids. In turn, intestinal inflammation damages intestinal flora, disrupts formation of normal stools, and leads to an alternating pattern of diarrhea and constipation. I discuss food-born allergieshere and throughout this site.— Increased consumption of fluids. Toddlers are introduced to addictive and easy to over-consume fluids, such as fruit juices, sweetened herbal teas, and soft drinks. These drinks have a prominent diuretic effect because they feature a high sugar content, extra volume of fluids, and lack minerals to maintain the proper isotonic balance (osmotic pressure similar to all other intra-body fluids.) In turn, excessive urination cause dehydration, that leads to drying out and hardening of the stools. Drinking more, as doctors recommend, only increases the problem, because the human intestines aren't a straight pipe, and these fluids never reach the large intestine. I discuss the role of fluids in bowel movements and constipation here.— Increased ability to withdraw stools, particularly in response to pain. Toddlers are more adept at suppressing the urge to defecate in an effort to avert a painful bowel movement. This action, unfortunately, increases the size, volume, and density of stools, and they become even more painful and difficult to evacuate, making constipation only worse. You can determine if your child suppresses stools by comparing their size and shape to the Bristol Stools Form Scale described here.— The disruption of the daily pattern related to growing up. Toddlers are likely to miss moving their bowels because they are so much more active throughout the day, and physical activities are more likely to suppress any defecation urge rather than stimulating it (as incorrectly believed by many). I explain the reasons behind this paradoxhere. Potty training comes in useful to overcome this problem, because it conditions toddlers to move their bowels by the clock, eliminating randomness and unpredictability.As the page oninfant's constipation noted, dietary changes aren't effective for 3/4 of all cases, and you are better off dealing with this problem quickly and assertively, otherwise it turns a random constipation event into a chronic and hard to manage condition.So when all else fails, and you are already confronted with a hard-to-break constipation pattern, useHydro-C to normalize stools. If you suspect disbacteriosis, break down a capsule ofEnterophilus, add the content to lukewarm fluid (water or milk), and give it to your child to drink on an empty stomach.Obviously, to prevent constipation in your toddler in the first place, you should address all of the above points: provide a reasonable amount of dietary fat; avoid dietary fiber at all costs; stay clear from allergenic food; never give a child sweet drinks and juices regardless of health claims; and begin training your child to move the bowels 'by the clock' as early as possible. To understand all this— most of it counter-intuitive — study this site as if your toddler's life depended on it. In fact, it does, and so does yours!Good luck,Konstantin Monastyrsky

Is Constipation Dangerous For My Health?

The mainstream medical establishment in the United States treats constipation as a mere nuisance rather than the serious medical condition that it is. To make a bad situation worse, the dominant dietary advice and medical treatment — particularly dietary fiber, overhydration, and laxatives — intensify constipation and its irreversible side effects even more.
 Constipation predisposes you to all major colorectal disorders starting with enlarged hemorrhoids and ending up with colorectal cancer. The reasons aren‘t difficult to understand — your colon was designed by nature to hold a few pounds of feces in transit. When a person gets constipated, the colon may be holding 10, 20 or more lbs. The weight by itself isn‘t the problem, but the volume is – large, heavy stools enlarge and stretch out the colon, irritate the colon mucosa, harm the anal canal, and may produce toxins related to fermentation and rotting.
 Constipation is one of the symptoms of disbacteriosis — a condition where the normal, intestinal flora is dead and missing. When alive, this flora performs several, important functions. First, it protects the colon itself from any inflammation-causing pathogens. Second, it produces essential B-vitamins and vitamin K, responsible for blood clotting. Third, it governs primary immunity. And fourth — bacteria form stools, and keep them soft and moist. When all of these functions are compromised, you aren‘t likely to enjoy a long and healthy life!
 Constipation significantly increases your risk of becoming a victim of medical error and/or of the side effects of drugs, all related to the treatment of any ensuing colorectal disorder.
 Constipation affects genitourinary health, particularly for women, because the large intestine and the female reproductive organs reside in close proximity. These problems run the gamut from undue pressure on the uterus to rectal prolapse inside the vagina, from fecal incontinence to miscarriage from straining, and numerous other, equally nasty problems.
 Constipation affects your quality of life, causes stress, and diminishes your overall sense of well-being. These things tend to self-perpetuate, and profoundly affect the cardiovascular, endocrine, and immune systems.
 Closer to the end of one‘s life, chronic constipation strips the large intestine from its thinning, mucosal membrane, and causes flat lesions and polyps that eventually transform into colon cancer. So, as you can see, the connections are plentiful, and I have just scratched the surface. Indeed, constipation is extremely dangerous for your health and life, and you should do everything possible to reverse it while it is still possible, or, at the very least, to manage its after-effects when it has become irreversible. To learn how, visit and study GutSense.org website! Good luck!RecommendationsChronic acquired constipation is a complex physiological, psychological, and social disorder specific to people and domesticated carnivorous pets in developed societies. Chronic constipation simply doesn't exist in indigenous societies and in the wild with the same degree of prevalence, or affects so many individuals and animals so early in life. Chronic constipation as a lifestyle disorder doesn't lend itself to simple solutions along the lines of headache —> pain reliever, or heartburn —> antacid. If, in fact, any simple or even moderately complex solution existed to prevent and eliminate constipation, you wouldn't be reading this page in the first place. So what, then, can you do?Well, there are two approaches — one immediate, to alleviate the most unpleasant aspects of constipation near instantly, such as hard stools, pain while moving the bowels, anal bleeding, and further damage and suffering. This part is simple. Just useHydro-C Colonic Moisturizer to:(a) To cleanse (flush out) the bowels from hard and stale stools. This step replaces bulking fiber, addictive laxatives, expensive colonics, and, in case of fecal impaction, surgical or manual intervention with a safe, non-addictive, inexpensive, reliable, and beneficial supplement. (b) To initiate a painless bowel movement when it is no longer achievable naturally because of anorectal nerve damage, peristalsis disorders related to an enlarged colon, medication that suppresses bowel movements, pregnancy, or disability, such as spinal cord trauma, stroke, and others.(c) To maintain proper morphology of stools for unassisted bowel movements (i.e. proper shape, weight, size, density, and moisture content.);(d) To manage exceptions that disrupt regular bowel movements and contribute to 'psychological' constipation, such as elevated stress, long-distance travel, night shift work, and similar others.The second strategy is long-term. It is intended to eliminate the underlying causes of chronic constipation and attain natural, unassisted bowel movements without fiber, laxatives, laxogenic food, and even supplements, such as Hydro-C. This goal is achievable only for individuals who suffer from functional or early stage latent constipation.

Infant constipation

 Why Is My Infant Constipated

The standing pediatric advice to accept irregular bowel movements as normal is a principal cause of constipation in infants and toddlers. After irregularity turns into constipation, the ensuing treatment with fiber, fluids, and juices often causes diarrhea, and is, in part, behind the epidemic of autism in the United States.Problems watching? View onYouTube.Transcript:There are two type of constipation — functional and organic. So, first, ask your pediatrician to rule out obstruction, impaction, infection, or any other condition behind organic constipation. Most other causes are functional, and are relatively easily remedied. The problem is, that doctors are likely to give you some terrible advice regarding functional constipation. This advice usually boils down to the three following dogmas: From the Textbook of Pediatrics: “There is no medical harm in stool staying in the body for a long time [link]:”— Wrong! A healthy infant is supposed to [ideally — KM] move the bowels at least four times daily. Missing a single day enlarges and hardens up stools, and makes constipation much worse. Author's comment: My statement above — that, ideally, breastfed infants are supposed to have at least 4 bowel movements (BMs) daily—
 Infrequent BMs are considered “normal” not because they are, but because babies don't display any outward symptoms of any clinical disorder. In this context any borderline condition, such as anemia or rickets, are also “normal” because they don't cause pain, incessant crying, high fever, or kill right away.Here is, actually, what's happening “under the radar:” the large intestine, as its name implies, is a large organ, potentially capable of accumulating and retaining several weeks worth of stale feces. These accumulated feces are gradually expelled whenever the bowel gets overfilled with digestive and metabolic residue from the other end (i.e. from the small intestine). This condition is called 'latent constipation,' and is quite widespread in adults. Straining andlarge stools are the primary symptoms of latent constipation.The highest risk from latent constipation in babies is the possibility of fecal reflux back into the small intestine — the precursor to severe intestinal inflammation, which is usually resolved by profuse diarrhea. After the diarrhea is over, the same vicious cycle starts anew.So, ask yourself: Is this normal when my baby's bowel is loaded with several weeks worth of stale feces? Not deadly, that's for sure, but is it normal?And the final puzzle is — why do the stools of breastfed babies remain small, soft, and moist for so long (i.e. not as dry, hard, and large as in adults in similar circumstances)? That is because the moisture content of infant's feces is similar to the moisture content of the infant's body — around 75%. In other words, the baby's bowel isn't adept at removing moisture from feces beyond this 75% threshold. In adults, stools become dry and harden up when their moisture content drops as little as 10%, down to 65%. Also, adults' stools are denser because solid food have higher residue content than milk or formula, and, of course, because of undigested fiber.Second dogma states as in this quote from the American Academy of Pediatrics: “Your pediatrician may suggest adding more water or juice to your child's diet [link]:”— Wrong again! Giving a child more water or juice is useless for constipation. In fact, excess water causes acute dehydration by stimulating profuse urination. The sorbitol in juices, such as prune or pear juice, causes acute diarrhea and disrupts stools even more. That is not the best way to relieve constipation… Third dogma, courtesy of Mayo Clinic, recommends: “For infants older than 4 months who are already eating solid foods, give them baby food that's high in fiber [link]:”— Wrong! Fiber dramatically expands stool size, blocks the absorption of fluids, and causes gas. This, in turn, causes bloating, flatulence, cramps, obstructions, allergies, and intestinal inflammation. In fact, this disastrous advice is the reason behind the epidemics of autism and juvenile diabetes in the United States. For the sake of your baby‘s health and future, as well as your own health and sanity, don‘t follow these damaging recommendations. If you still doubt my words, just observe your baby, and keep a diary to confirm for yourself every single problem I have outlined above. Finally, visit my web site to learn why following these recommendations may ruin your child‘s health. Good luck!What should you do if your infant experiences irregularity or constipation?According to the article “Prevalence, symptoms and outcome of constipation in infants and toddlers” published in The Journal of Pediatrics [link], the prevalence rate for constipation in infants (under 12 months) is near 3%, and in toddlers (up to 24 months) — around 10%. From those cases, 97% represent functional constipation, the subject of this page.According to the same source, the dietary changes (more fluids and fiber) and corn syrup — resolved only 25% of all cases, while the use of laxatives — Milk of Magnesia or Polyethylene Glycol 3350 — resolved constipation in 92% of all cases. The authors remarked that “Both milk of magnesia and polyethylene glycol were efficient and safe in infants and toddlers.” From this information we can draw the following important conclusions:
 First, the increase in the prevalence of constipation in toddlers vis-à-vis infants points out that the transition from a fiber-free liquid diet (i.e. breast milk or formula) to solid food contributes to constipation. It sounds counterintuitive because most people believe in a material connection between foods and stools, while there is almost none, or the opposite of what's expected. I explain this paradox on this page: Constipation Unplugged.
Second, dietary changes aren't effective in 75% of all cases, and not only are they a waste of precious time, but they may also have the potential of causing chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, and neurological damage as I explain on this page: What Is The Connection Between Infant Constipation, Diarrhea, and Autism?
Third, due to the emergency nature of pediatric constipation,..
