solution constipation in children?

What is the lasting solution to constant constipation in children?

It is not uncommon for children to experience constipation from time to time. Constipation in children is defined as having delayed or difficulty passing stools for greater than two weeks. "Normal" for children 3 years of age and older is usually 1 bowel movement per day and it does not need to be every day. Treatment and maintenance of constipation in children is mostly alleviated through a child's diet. Filling your child's diet with foods that contain fiber (e.g., cereal, apricots, prunes, peaches, pears, plums, beans, peas, broccoli, and raisins) can help prevent constipation. Increase fluids (preferably water, prune, pear, or apple juice) and add more fruits to their diet. Try to limit the amount of dairy products (including milk) because they are considered to be more constipating. For a more immediate treatment to constipation in children, glycerin suppositories work quickly and are generally effective within 15 to 60 minutes. Avoid stimulant laxatives (e.g., Senna, bisacodyl, and Peri-Colace) unless directed by your doctor. Miralax is approved for children older than 2 years of age.
Miralax is now available over-the-counter as a powder formulation. Miralax is mixed in a liquid (water or juice) and dosed once a day for the maintenance treatment of constipation in children. Consult your child's pediatrician regarding your concerns. Jennifer Carey, PharmD
